Pesticide reaching soil will interact with organic and mineral constituents and undergo biological and chemical transformations. In turn, this will determine the persistence of a pesticide, its availability to nontarget organisms and the potential for transport to ground and surface waters. Mathematical simulation models are used to describe the inter-related processes involved. Although a correct description of sorption and degradation is essential, models are based on a number of historic simplifying assumptions. Recent research undertaken by CSL scientists, and funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and Defra, has evaluated these assumptions in a systematic way and developed a refined model to describe sorption and degradation in soil. The research showed that simplifications built into current descriptions of pesticide degradation in soil did not lead to unacceptable errors in simulation. In contrast, pesticide sorption deviated strongly from ideal behaviour. The current assumption is that equilibrium sorption is attained instantaneously, whereas in our experiments, equilibrium was approached over 1-2 weeks with stronger time dependence for more lipophilic compounds. The pattern of adsorption of pesticide onto soil particles was not followed during desorption hysteresis ; . A sequence of successively more realistic experiments linked by modelling was used to show that the deviation from ideal behaviour could be fully explained by slow diffusion into and out of soil aggregates. The atmosphere we breathe, however, is a mixture of gases and particles and ambient particulate matter itself is a complex mixture of organic and non-organic substances. This talk will examine whether toxicological investigations should be conducted on a pollutant-by-pollutant basis or by looking at air pollution as a mixture. Toxicologists have examined interactions between particles and gases for a number of decades but nearly all of these studies have looked at binary systems. A small number of investigators have looked at multiple pollutants, but with current technology and statistics, it has proven extremely difficult to properly evaluate dose-response curves and time course effects with more than 2 pollutants. Thus, it is a challenge to the field of inhalation toxicology to study interactions synergy, additive, or otherwise ; within the real world of multiple pollutant exposure.
