Stimulants act on the "pleasure circuit" of the brain by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters present in each synapse -- the space between the brain's billions of nerve cells.This causes feelings of pleasure and euphoria. An increase in central nervous system activity means that heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature increase. More sugar is released into the bloodstream, causing effects that can vary from a mild feeling of alertness to nervousness and insomnia. Other effects are increased physical activity, decreased appetite, increased respiration, hyperthermia, and euphoria.The altered neurotransmitter levels can lead to irritability, violent behavior and paranoia. Serious medical complications can occur, including heart damage, strokes and psychosis. When a chronic user stops taking stimulants, withdrawal symptoms can include depression, anxiety, fatigue, paranoia, aggression, and an intense craving for the drug. In Molecular Cell Biology, Drs. Singh and Kumar published the results of another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study showing CoQ10's benefits in combating atherosclerosis, increasing survival, and reducing the risk of subsequent cardiac events in heart attack patients, including those taking lipidlowering drugs.2 The scientists reported that among 73 patients receiving 120 mg per day of oral CoQ10 for one year after a first heart attack, the treated subjects suffered significantly fewer cardiac events than their untreated counterparts 24.6% vs. 45% ; . The CoQ10 group had a nearly 50% lower incidence of nonfatal heart attacks 13.7% vs. 25.3% ; and significantly fewer deaths than the untreated patients. Further, the researchers found plasma levels of vitamin E and protective high-density lipoprotein HDL ; were significantly higher in CoQ10 patients, and thiobar-bituric acid reactive substances, malondialdehyde, and diene con-jugates were lower than in the control group. According to Dr. Singh, it is important to note, with respect to concern over statin therapy and CoQ10 supplements, that half of the patients in each group were taking lovastatin. Last year, Danish scientists at Copenhagen University Hospital's Heart Center, led by noted re-searcher Dr. Svende Aage Mort-ensen, announced the launch of a large, two-year multinational trial to "establish the future role of CoQ10 as part of a maintenance therapy in patients with chronic heart failure."3 The double-blind, multi-center trial will review morbidity and mortality data on patients with chronic heart failure taking supplemental CoQ10. The perceived lack of pigmentation in these lesions and the wide variation in clinical presentation makes visual diagnosis without the benefit of tissue biopsy extremely difficult. The classic clinical characteristics of cutaneous melanoma are alterations in the symmetry of a pigmented lesion's appearance, irregularity of its borders, variegated color, and large diameter; findings more common in early melanomas.
